Stuart's History ...
Stuart
was first settled in 1880. Incorporated 1914. Chartered 1925. Known as the
County seat, Stuart was originally named Potsdam from 1893 to 1896 and was named
by Otto Stypman one of the earliest settlers of Stuart. (more info)

Where
Did Stuart Get Its Name?
Stuart, Florida on the beautiful St. Lucie River was named in honor of Homer
Hine Stuart Jr. The origin of the name is confirmed by correspondence of Homer
Hine Stuart Jr. and his brother Inglis Stuart, Florida East Coast Railway
material in the archives at Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, land records and
newspaper articles published when the Stuart name referred to the settlement on
the north side of the St. Lucie River. (more info)
Stuart on the St. Lucie - A Pictorial History
Stuart
on the St. Lucie, by Sandra Thurlow, includes over 350 photographs and features
profiles of more than 30 pioneer families from the Stuart area. Ernie Lyons, Ed
Menninger, Ad Whiticar, Grover Cleveland, Gov. John Martin, Homer Stuart, Jr.
and Bill McCoy are showcased as well. Ernie’s wonderful autobiographical piece
“The Great Fire” and Dr. Menninger’s humorous “What we need around here is a few
more relatives,” editorial are reprinted in their entirety. There are chapters
on sport fishing and commercial fishing, pineapple growing, the incorporation of
the city and the formation of Martin County. Other headings include:
African-American Heritage, Schools, Churches, Medicine, Lodging, Banks, the
Airport and WWII. Stuart on the St. Lucie is $39.95 plus tax at the Stuart
Heritage museum and area bookstores.
