Mattie Belle Roberts arrived in Stuart from Key West in May, 1909 with her
family - the Rev. N. P. McQuarrie (her father), Rebecca Agnes Woodworth
McQuarrie (her mother), her 9 month old daughter Elizabeth and her sisters,
Vesta and Edith.
Her father, Rev. McQuarrie, was head of the "Gospel Navy", relocated to Stuart
from Key West in 1909 and providing ministry to isolated settlers up and down
the east coast of Florida.
Her husband, Dr. Charles Earnest Roberts, was Stuart's first dentist, starting
his practice in the early 1900's and moving his family to the Atlanta area in
1918. They were married in 1907.
Mrs. Roberts served a term as school principal in 1909, taught piano lessons and
served as the first Stuart's newspaper society editor. She gave birth to two
children in Stuart - Charles Neil (1911) and Isabel (1913).Mrs. Roberts passed
away in 1978 and is buried with her husband, parents and daughter Elizabeth in
Stuart.
