About Recycling
Single Stream Recycling Program
Effective October 1, 2007
What is Single Stream Recycling?
Single stream recycling is the commingling or combining of recyclables in one recycling container. This means no more sorting of recyclable materials and no more heavy lifting, making it easier to recycle.
Benefits include:
- easy-to-wheel recycling carts
- provide greater capacity
- reduce litter
- provide protection from the weather
The City has adopted a recycling mascot named “Sammy Sailfish.” “Sammy Sailfish” can be seen on the City’s recycling trucks, multi-family recycling tote bags (“Sammy Sacks”), educational materials, and at City sponsored events, appealing to all ages to promote recycling.

Multi-family customers are provided a “Sammy Sack,” a handy tote bag for collecting and transporting recyclables to the blue recycling carts in your complex. “Sammy Sacks” are a green wise product to be used repeatedly, helping the customer from awkwardly carrying out recyclables and eliminating the use of commonly used plastic disposable bags, which are not accepted in the Single Stream Program. This sack can be kept in the kitchen next to the garbage can or in a utility area, encouraging recycling participation.
